Schools
It will be the responsibility of today’s children to face the challenges and implications of biodiversity loss in the future. This is why Diversity for Life works with students to build a better understanding of the value of agricultural biodiversity and its impact on all aspects of human life.
Current activities with schools include the Oral History Project and Teaching the Teachers.
The Oral History Project
Armed with voice recorders and cameras, students are interviewing their grandparents and other older friends and relatives about the foods they ate when they were small. The children encourage the elders to talk about their food memories, including cultural and religious uses of foods. The oral histories will be placed on the diversityforlife.org website where they will be available for students to learn about food cultures around the world.
Schools in Italy are already participating in the oral history project, with Kenya set to come on board later this year. See the first oral histories here.
We hope to involve schools from many different countries in the Oral History Project. If you are interested in learning more, contact us at info@diversityforlife.org.
Teaching the Teachers
The campaign is working with Italian teachers to develop lessons on agricultural biodiversity for secondary school students in Italy. The project was launched in Rome on 25 November 2008 at the National Academy of Sciences. Partners include the National Research Council, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Association of Science Teachers.
The aim of Teaching the Teachers is to help school children discover the value of biodiversity and its impact on every aspect of their lives. The teaching materials will be tested in the Italian region of Lazio and thereafter be spun off to all Italian regions. There is the possibility of making the lesson plans and materials available for adaptation by other schools in other countries.
